Congratulations Phil!

I guess the first thing I should say this week is Congratulations to Mr. Mickelson. With his second tour victory of the season last week, Phil joins an elite list of golfers to have won multiple events during 2008: Tiger Woods. That’s right, Phil & Tiger are the only two to have accomplished this trivial feat. This win also fanned the flames of the famous “Tiger vs. Lefty” debate that golf afficianados have been wishing and waiting for. (Really they have been wishing for a Tiger vs. “Anybody-who-can-consistently-come-close-to-Tiger”) Let me tell you right now that is never gonna happen, and here’s why: First, the obvious, Tiger is a rare breed of golfer that only comes around now and then. The golf world was lucky when two were close in Arnie & Jack. Lefty isn’t quite there, which brings me to #2: Phil has some serious closing problems. Even with Rod Pampling & Tim Clark choking on the back nine Sunday, Phil remains that loveable guy who regularly gets close enough to be there when others choke, but rarely dominates a tournament like Tiger. In fact, if the stars were to align and put Phil & Tiger in the final grouping on Sunday at, say, the U.S. Open, I think we all know that Tiger would flip that switch and Phil would start swinging as though blinded by the light. So, congrats Phil and thanks for giving the media a little something to write about.

By the way, from a fantasy perspective, I fully expect Phil to end up ranked 50+ this week. He has yet to win back-to-back tournaments in his career.
